I had my first got a foundation paper piecing. It turned out OK. I wanted something simple but still worth the trouble of doing using this technique. And I'm on a major rainbow binge at the moment. So I got to use up some scraps. Had a couple of problems, really learner issues - trimming on the wrong line, sewing wrong colour (duh!) etc. But all in all it went very smoothly.
Post by http://laren.blogspot.com
Larenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12885582206860385433noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047780.post-13831868435715890832018-01-16T11:30:00.000+11:002018-01-16T11:30:53.729+11:00Star 22 of 365 - Star-A-Day

I'm generally not one for specific quilting rulers. However, I've been wanting to make a pineapple quilt for a while and I didn't want to do it using foundation paper piecing or having to use a normal ruler which would require doing maths (that is just not going to end well). So I had a look around and found the Creative Grids Pineapple Trim tool. It comes in two sizes standard (6", 8", 10") or mini (4", 5", 6"). I had plans for two quilts, so I bought each size.

Before I started I watched the videos (standard and mini) provided by Creative Grids on how to use the tools. I'd recommend watching the standard size one, even if you are getting the mini as I think it provides a better demo of the step by step procedures of using the tool. Missouri Start Quilts has an even longer, every single step video for the mini.

I decided to work using the mini tool first up. It's pretty simple, you cut strips at least 1 1/4" wide and start by sewing these to a 1 1/2" central square (different starting sizes for the standard tool). It also gives you the measurements to pre-cut your pieces. I chose this options because it would reduce the trimming required during construction. It gave about 6 different lengths, but for simplicity sake, I rounded to 2", 3" and 4" strips. So if you've got alot of small scraps, this is a great tool for using them up. If you pre-cut your strips, that's pretty much all the maths required for using this tool. Cool!!

Once you've sewn the first round on, you follow the guidelines marked on the ruler and start to trim. All the lines are clearly marked and labelled!! I've got a couple of rulers where the markings aren't 100% clear and could really benefit from labels on the markings.
The pieces don't need to be the entire width of the previous piece. For safety sake, I did make mine overhang, but because I have a sewing guard on my 1/4" foot, it made adding the two opposite sides for each round difficult. So for the first few rounds in future, I will trim them (with scissor, a good in front of the tv job) so they line up with the perpendicular straight edge, allowing them to run smoothly through my 1/4" foot.

I'm always a big fan of pressing seams as I go when constructing a block. I just gives you a much neater finish. For this block, it is vital to set and press the seams for each round before trimming and continuing onto the next round of sewing. Here you can see the before and after of setting the seams. It really does make a big difference.

And here is the back for the completed block. Doesn't it look so nice and neat??

Overall, I'm extremely happy with the tool. They aren't cheap - $40 AU each. But they really make what is a complicated block very easily, a real no brainer. As long as you are careful and use the right trimming guide (you use one side of the tool for even rounds and the other side for odd), you can't go wrong. But be warned, the first thing I would do starting this project is put a new blade in my rotary cutter (which I did), between cutting the strips and the trimming, you do alot of blade work on this block.

And even though the tool is easy and fast to use, this block does take time. I'm going to be working in batches, as it would be a real pain to try and do a quilt sized project in one go using the mini tool (even using the largest 6" size).

Stay tuned, I plan to make a test block (only one this time) for the other project I had in mind. This is the one that actually made me want to make a pineapple block quilt.

And, I really should've tested out the colour scheme in EQ8 before I started sewing. I want to make sure the secondary circle pattern is distinct, which the brown does. But I love pink! But maybe a bit too much and the circle isn't as clear? Yep, the pink gives a sort of cross pattern, whereas the brown gives a circle. Phew, I'd hate to have made those first six blocks for nothing!
I love this project so far, but there is one small problem. It's a bit small. I don't want this to be a lap quilt and I don't want to make anymore blocks. So my plan is to set what I have on point and then finish the corners in one fabric.

Now my natural instinct is to go with the light colours - in this case beige/tan. But for some reason this doesn't seem right. So I'm thinking maybe the indigo? I've ordered enough of each option to finish it off. In the meantime, I've done a mock up in EQ7.

What do people think? Tan or indigo?
I am pleased with how they turned out. I think I managed to get a good variety of fabrics into the blocks, without any repeats while still maintaining enough contrast.

I was able to do a quick layout of all the blocks. By using just the two
colours, it does change the effect of the original pattern, but I'm
still happy with it. I just need to do a proper layout to work out the
final placement before I sew it all together.
They are pretty simple and fast to work up. I love the colour combination.
This is the stars cut out and ready for sewing. I didn't get any in progress shots because I was working on them at night and the light is terrible for photos.

Post by http://laren.blogspot.com
Larenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12885582206860385433noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5047780.post-73797616617733065992017-10-02T02:40:00.000+11:002017-10-02T02:40:19.616+11:00MoonstoneSooo I may have slightly jumped onto a bandwagon. I've seen the Moonstone EPP stuff floating around for a while. I liked that it was a bit different but not enough to join in. However, as is so often the case, it just took on Instagram photo and that was it, I was in. It was some work in progress shots by nightquilter. I've been wanting to do something rainbowy using really saturated colours for a while.

However, I hadn't been able to find a pattern that really jumped out at me. In addition, I didn't have a very good variety of saturated colours. And those that I did have tended to be very limited in the designs on the fabric (lots of dots for some reason). This is where another event added to the confluence. I was checking Instagram late one night and saw that Alison Glass was doing a one week sale which included colour themed bundles of her back catalogue. I'd been eyeing her stuff off for a couple of weeks and it seemed like the stars had aligned. So I jumped in and ordered one of the full colour sets (the sale involved sets being offered for one day only, with each day being one/two colours). Part of what attracted me was that the sets included a variety of not just current fabric lines, but back catalogue designs as well. I liked the variety this would offer.

It also happened that the big annual craft fair was on that week. So I went to try and find some more Alison Glass fabric. And we all know when you go shopping for something specific, you never seem to be able to find it!! But the shopping gods were on my side, despite it being the crappiest show for years, there was a vendor there basically just selling AG fabric in 30cm WOF pieces. I bought quite a bit. The only issue is there wasn't any yellow or orange. So I might have to go looking for some of that.
