Embers and Ash (Orange and Grey Block Quilt) Finished

Another one bites the dust!! The Orange and Grey Block quilt is finished. It's been done for a few days but I couldn't get a decent photo.

I'm bad at coming up with names, so I asked for suggestions on one of my quilting lists. So far, I'm loving the suggestion of "Embers and Ash"!! (Thanks Kayt!!)

This quilt was inspired by "A New View" by Esch House Quilts found via Pinterest.
And a close up.

And the back.

Grey and Orange Quilted

Managed to get this one quilted in one day. Straight line across the grey and straight line vertically for the orange. And fair warning here, I did something that will freak out the purists. I didn't bother sinking the threads where it stopped mid quilt, I just did back stitch!!!

You can see where the grey and orange meet that I've done backstitch rather than cut the thread long and bury it into the quilt. I tried doing the lines as one continuous up, across and down but it looked awful. So I did something I rarely do, I unpicked and did it again. Doing it this way the quilting was all done middle to outside and looked alot better. I just couldn't face all that hand finishing. I've done it on another quilt I did the next day, which has now been washed and there was no ill effects, no fraying at all. So I will probably do it again.

Basting At Guild Day

My Guild is pretty big and has four regular meetings per month. On the odd months where we have five Saturdays, we hold a special meeting. We don't get as many people to this one, and it's a good opportunity to work on projects that require a bit more room.

I had two quilts which needed to be basted, so I figured using the tables are Guild would be better than scramling around on the floor!!

So here is the quilt duct taped to the table. I needle and thread basted, I'd don't trust myself with pins!!

Orange and Grey Scrappy Top Finished

I thought I'd finished this one but the more I looked at it, the more I wasn't happy with it. Because I'd changed the design slightly, to make the orange blocks asymetrical, it needed another vertical row of grey blocks on the left. And once I'd added that row, I needed to add a bottom and top border.

Now I've got to work out what to do with the backing. I want to do a pieced backing but trying to line up the orange blocks is a bit of a nightmare.

Sorry for the quality of the photo but it was blowing a gale and this was the best I could do.

Orange and Grey Quilt Put Together

The blocks for this one have been sitting in the cupboard for a while now. I'm on leave so I am trying to work my way through some of my UFO's so I can clear some space and declutter a bit.

The plan had been to make it like this, with the orange blocks all lined up. But as I was looking at it, I had a play and tried this layout:

I decided that I liked this one better and so does Cleo:

The more I looked at it the more I liked the offset setting. It also sort of continues the zig zag theme from my Pink and Grey Log Cabin quilt. Start of a series!!

I had decided to leave it there. But the more I think about it, I want to put another grey row down the left hand side to make the offset more obvious and get the middle block from the middle of the quilt. This would mean putting another thin row of grey top and bottom (which was part of the original design).

I might leave it for a couple of days. I think part of wanting to get it done is coming from always only having a day here or there to work on them. But I'm on leave, so I do have time to make more blocks. But I do want it finished.

Something Other Than Blue and White!

I'm just a little bit blue and whited out! I've managed to keep up with the Block-A-Day but it can be a struggle. I finally managed to do some non-BAD2014 sewing on Sunday.

These the the sections I'd previously made. I managed to get them all sewn up into the final 9" block. It is the same block as in my Field Greens quilt, but using 3.5" strips instead of 2.5". It's a donation quilt so I wanted it to work up faster.

Here is the finished pile of blocks. They just need to be pressed and then the top sewn together. It was just too hot to contemplate ironing.

I had sworn not to start any new projects but I couldn't help myself!! Lots of orange strips. This will be an Orange and Grey quilt. I'm thinking I might do a series. Maybe blue next??
Here are all of them done. I think they work well together. Again, too hot to iron.

And finally, it was Guild Buy, swap and sell day on Saturday. I was hoping for more swapping but not many people brought fabric to swap. Anyway, I got rid of a few rulers I didn't need and some fabric. I bought these. A big bag of 14 Log Cabins and a heap of strips. I thought they were all full lengths, but they were already cut for log cabins. A bit of a bummer but I can still work with them. And 4 m of Jinny Beyer for $20 - score.
