Shaded Nine Patch Quilt Finished

This was the second project I started when I got back into quilting a couple of years back. It got as far as having the nine patches made and I was then distracted by other things. The last couple of months have been all about finishing off all my UFO's. This is the second last one. I just need to bind one more quilt and then I will have NO UFO's at all!!

This means I can now start working on new projects!! But they will be slow going as all my spare time is going into my new uni course.

Shaded Nine Patch Top Finished

The Shaded Ninepatch top is done. Not the best picture but it was way too windy to put on the line for a better photo. My only issue is should I put another blue border around the outside edge? Or will a blue binding be enough??

Shaded Nine Patch Border

Getting to the final stages of the Shaded Nine Patch quilt. I made up the green nine patches for the outer border and added the thin blue inner border. Just need to sew the green nine patches together and add to the rest of the top and the top will be done.

Shaded Nine Patch Sections Done

This is my second oldest UFO (afer Moonglow). It's been sitting there ready for construction driving my nuts, especially the HST that needed to be sewn together. Part of the problem was that I didn't like some of the yellow fabrics I had used. I felt they weren't strong enough. It's really hard to get truly yellow tone on tone fabrics. I managed to pick up a few at the Sydney Craft Show last week and made some more nine patch blocks. The pattern is from Lisa Walton at Dyed and Gone to Heaven.

This is the main part of the quilt laid out so I could see how the sections worked together.

This is the centre panel of green and blue. Sorry for the crappy colour, it was taken at night on my phone!!

One of four blue corner sections.

Here is one of four yellow sections.

I need to make up a heap of green nine patches for the border. And sew these sections together. But it is a least at a stage I can live with for a while, but I really would like this finished in the next couple of weeks. I think this is doable as nine patches are so simple they are something I can work on after work!!

WIP Wednesday - Shaded Ninepatch

On the weekend, I laid out the Yellow/Green panels of what I am calling my Shaded Ninepatch Quilt. Since I don't have a detailed plan for my quilt (I only knew I needed a WHOLE bunch of yellow, green and blue ninepatches), I need to layout and play with the blocks for each panel.

As a result of this process I needed to make some more green blocks. I had enough, but by the fourth panel, too many blocks with similar fabric were in evidence. So I've made more blocks and we re-layout the panels again to get a bit more random in! Here are the new blocks:

Here is the yellow  and green panel laid out. It isn't sewn up yet as I am still working on the placement.

An invaluable tool in this process was a $3 peep hole from the hardware shop. As I was working inside, I didn't really have the distance to see the full effect of the blocks together. As soon as I looked at the blocks with the peep hole, a couple of "dead zones" immediately jumped out.

This design also requires the use of alot of half blocks, essentially nine patches cut in half. I have alot of these left over. But the beauty of patchwork is that they won't go to waste. I plan on trimming them slightly and adding a triangle in a matching solid. I have so many of these there should be plenty for a decent sized project.

Nine Patch Leftovers - Help!

So, I have a heap of strips left over from the nine patch project I am working on. There should be enough to make something useful from with a little bit of work. What I lack are ideas. I was thinking maybe a couple of strips of plain fabric? But I don't want to buy too much more fabric or deal with having to work out co-ordinating colours. Or maybe one of each colour per block to make a stripy pattern? But that wouldn't give me as many blocks as if I only used one strip per block.

So any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Here are the strips to give an idea of colours.

Also, here is the pile of nine patch blocks ready to be made into the top. It's gonna be huge!!
