Not So Lazy Sunday

Today would've been a good day to bludge, but more plans. Someone from Adam's work was singing in a band, so we went to see them. Played the pokies, had a drink (Coke for me as I was driving!) and listened to jazz. Luckily it wasn't the hard core impro stuff, I can't stand that. Then we went out for tea and then back home for vegging out.

D-Day

Well, the event that I am making the Persian outfit for is on at 3pm today (well, 4pm but I have to pick someone up to give them a lift).

Another early start and I made a miniture version of the coat of someones little boy. Not lined. It only took an hour. It was so cute and I just realised that I didn't get a photo of it!!

I then had to put together the kits for the class on tablet weaving that I was going to give. I managed to get that done by lunch time. That gave me 3 hours to come up with a solution to the problem of closures for the maroon coat.

Then my boyfriend made an excellent suggestion of using hooks and eyes as closures thus making the buttons decorative. This worked very well. I ended up finishing the coat with a couple of hours to spare. Here is the finished product.

And here is the whole outfit (including funky hat!!)

It's not the best photo in the world but you get the idea. All in all I am happy with the way it turned out. Luckily, the place we were holding the event was air conditioned!! First event ever, talk about lucky. It was a newcomers event and we had heaps of new people, so it was worth the effort.

Off to bed now. Very tired.

Maroon Persian Coat

Well, I got up at 7am and went to bed at 11.30om and it still isn't done. I did however, get it cut out, over locked (same with the lining), sewn together, lining into coat and all the buttons on. Problem was the loops, I didn't have anything that would work. Also the coat was a bit tight across the hips. So I've decided to go to bed and worry about it in the morning.

Blue Coat Nearly Done

I got most of the lining on the blue coat done last night. The front seam is sewn in. I have pressed the sleeves ready for finishing. My main decision now is do I sew the bottom hem together or do I finish the front and back separately and let them hang like that??

The lining is quite slippery and sneaks forward when the coat is open. I am thinking of using some hemming tape to keep the lining in place. I don't want to stitch the front seam as the stithing really shows up on the fabric and I don't think that looks very good. I will have to see how it goes.

Once the blue one is done, I will get to work on the plum one. Since this is to be worn closed. If I run out of time, I can just skip putting the lining in. Though I know if I don't put it in now, it might never go in. The other thing I am thinking of doing is perhaps liking this one with cotton rather than the nasty silky acetate lining I have.

Any opinions?

Houston, We Have a Problem

The fabric for the red coat arrived last night. But there is one small problem. It' s not red. It's maroon or deep plum. The pattern is fine, but the colour is not what I wanted. I wanted really bright and striking. The plum will work, but it's just not what I had planned. But at this stage, with the event at the end of the week and no money left, I will just have to use it. Bugger.

The photo is a bit dodgy, it was windy and I was rushing, but you get an idea. Also, remember that this needs to have bit trimmed from down the sides of both front openings. I deliberalty made these a bit bigger to give me room for the second coat and to make sure it was bit enough.

Tabards

I finally got the sewing day, after going to the wrong address and confusing some poor little old lady. In all fairness, I went to the address that had been posted, it was just the wrong one. We managed to get a fair number of tabards started. We only go two finished, but we got another 6 to nearly done and another 9 started. So we are going to do another day and that should get most of them done. We had a pretty good turnout of people.

When I got home, I did some housework and then basically just bludged, I was very tired, mainly cause it was so muggy. Very hot day combined with all the moisture in the ground, it was like a sauna all day until the storms hit again in the afternoon.

Blackout

I went shopping today and managed to pick up a couple of bits of brocade that should do for the head-dress for my Persian outfit. A cream floral and a gold swirly pattern for the duck hat. I got a pattern from Roxane Farabis' page and made a couple of modifications (I put some iron on interfacing in to stiffen it up). It turned out pretty well. I just have to cut and edge the chiffon for the veil and it will be done. I am still waiting for the red fabric to arrive for the second coat for my outfit. Hopefully it will arrive on Monday. That should give me plenty of time. But I am worried that my gold metallic frogs won't arrive and that I might have to get some other sort of fastening for this coat. I found some buttons on the weekend that will do in a pinch. I should've bought them but I am bit broke this week.

I just managed to get all the sewing done when we got hit by a huge thunderstorm and were blackedout. We lost power for a few hours. I just got out my mini-disk player and listened to music.

I also managed to get mostly organised for a sewing day we are having tomorrow to make up some tabards for the group. Interesting to see the turnout.

Persian Lining

I got the yellow/gold lining done for the blue Persian coat. Well, mostly done. I just have to sew a few of the seams down and put the centre back gore in tomorrow and it will be done. I didn't iron the seams before sewing, and now I think I should have. Ah all, most of it won't be seen.

Persian Under Way

Last night I got the first of the Persian coats sewn together. This is just the outer layer. I still have to do the lining. It sewed up really quickly. And more importantly, it took a press on the seams when I ironed it. I was worried that it wouldn't and that I would have to sew the seams down to get it to sit right, which would have ruined the look of the coat. But all is well, just need to get onto the lining.

Persian Progress

I overlocked all the pieces for the first Persian coat last night. I started to sew it together and stuffed up the arms (which I do first). Luckily, I had enough fabric left over and was able to salvage it, but I decided not to keep sewing incase I made another mistake. With a bit of luck, I should get the rest of it done tonight or at least well on the way. If I can get the blue one done, that will leave me the weekend to do the red one (if the fabric arrives in time). Then all I have to do is the headdress. I have asked someone at work for some fabric. He makes vestments and has the sort of fabric I need.

No embroidery. I hope to get some done today at work. Then I can post a progress picture.

Not Much Happening

No sewing on the weekend. I was going to do some more work on my Persian outfit but our neighbours came by and didn't leave until late. So all I managed to do was cut out the linings. So tonight, I should be able to get all the edges overlocked and maybe even start putting it together.

Walka Went Well

Yesterday was a big one. We had a shopping trip in the morning to pick up Adam's birthday present, a computer game. Then it was back home and finish getting ready for the Walka Event.

I left myself plenty of time to get lost on the way there. I was fine until I got to Maitland, too many roundabouts. But I got there in the end with only a couple of wrong turns.

I got changed into garb once I got there (too hard to drive in). I chatted with a few people and then got the A and S competition set up. We ended up with three entries in the mask comp and one in the item of wood.

I ended up helping in the kitchen as well, so by the end of the night I was pretty tired. Got home at about midnight, and was watching TV to wind down a bit when I flicked onto some thing that caught my attention. I thought to myself, boy, this sure sounds like Firefly. Then the opening credits came up and it was. Typical bloody channel Seven, putting this on without any advertising at midnight Saturday. I am so going to buy the DVD so I get the real first ep and in the correct order. So I watched that and then went to bed.

Getting Ready for Tommorrow

I've packed up all my stuff, ready for the event tomorrow. With a bit of luck there will actually be entries in the Arts and Sciences competition.

I am looking forward the first ep of the Battlestar Galactica mini-series tonight. With a bit of luck I should get some sewing done as well.

Persian Outfit Started

Last night I finally started to work on my Persian outfit (based on this image) for Newcomers Feast. It only took about 20 mins, as I am using a basic t-tunic pattern. The outfit will be a series of coats. I will be making two, plus a chemise. The outer coat will be made from this fabric:

The layer underneath will be red. I wanted orange and I found the perfect fabric on Ebay but the seller will only take bank money orders from outside the USA. Well, I wanted 10 metres, so they just lost a big sale!

Back on the Blackwork Bike

Well, I've gotten back on the blackwork horse after a bit of a break. As well as the above mentioned pieces, I also got another LOG pouch done, this one of Anglo-Saxon inspiration. I've done two hours on the second sleeve.

Anglo-Saxon Log Pouch Embroidery Done

I put in another few hours today and got the second half of the embroidery done. I will now make it up into a double sided pouch. It shouldn't take long to do. I really wish I could leave my sewing machine set up permanently.

Anglo-Saxon LOG Pouch

I started this one at 7pm and it was finished by 10pm, you gotta love laid and couched work!! Red wool twill base, two strands of Appletons crewel wool in black, off white and two shades of yello (dark for the base and a lighter one for the couching threads). I am unhappy about the very wonky stars. I think this one is going to have to be the back. Since this one is so quick to work up, I am going to do the back as well.

It will be sewn up into a simple square pouch, no tassels etc. It is a LOG pouch. The design is about 5" square.

Learning Online 2005

I went with a few people from work down to Sydney to look at the vendors exhibition associated with Learning Online 2005. Weather has taken a turn (for worse or better is a matter of perspective!), with lots of rain. It had cleared by the time we go into the city. Got lots of freebies, found a few new good resources. On the way back we got caught in the hail storm, we were almost through when the windscreen got smashed. Didn't shatter so we made it back to work ok.

On the needlework front, now sewing but I got a design onto fabric, just have to buy some black crewel wool to get started. I will pick some up tomorrow night.
